The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has hammered Nigeria over the invasion of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja by fans after the Super Eagles failed to beat Ghana in a world cup play-off last month
Hundreds of fans had invaded the stadium after Ghana held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw and qualified for the world cup on an away goal rule. The fans vandalised the stadium and caused terror.
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee on Monday released its decisions based on the specific circumstances of each case of violence and others during the last world cup play-offs.
The committee berated Nigeria for not allowing order and security during the match against Ghana.
It particularly said Nigeria failed to implement existing safety rules and failure to ensure that law and order were maintained in the stadium.
FIFA also decried invasion of the field of play and throwing of objects by fans.
The body said Nigeria breached its article 16 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC).
In the light of the above, the body fined Nigeria CHF 150,000 (about ₦63,570,255)
Nigeria will also play one match behind closed doors with spectators, as part of the sanction.
